A.A.U. Mat Meet Award Goes to Cee College
The 1949 A A U Senior wrestling meet will be staged in Cedar Rapids April 8 to 10 sponsored by the Young Men's Bureau of the Chamber of Commerce. Cedar Rapids won the award because many top collegiate wrestlers are in Iowa. Four Iowa schools had members on the 1948 Olympic team and Cornell College of Mt. Vernon is a former A A U national champion. Iowa Teachers at Cedar Falls and the state universities in Iowa are named national powerhouses. The convention also announced track and field decisions including awarding the 60 yard dash to Eddie Conwell of New Jersey. Bill Mathis of Illinois holds the current title after a disputed decision. The basketball committee considered awarding the tourney to Oklahoma City rather than Denver, a decision likely to face floor challenges. Germany was invited back to international sports for the bobsled championships at Lake Placid with dates set for late January to February. National championships and other events are scheduled across the country with several honors and memberships awarded to long-serving officials.
