Hemp Plants May Produce Linen Thread in Iowa
DES MOINES AP—Hersey E. Hazen says 11 hemp plants in Iowa may become linen thread producers after the war. Iowa State College researchers report a retting process yielding thread stronger than linen and of higher quality than the finest Irish. Plants, built by War Industries Corp at $350,000 each, may be taken over by linen manufacturers if viable, though reconversion costs and war needs temper plans. Disposition likely after the European war ends. most plants to close by end of next year, with order of closure listed by location.

Farm prices too high, veteran buyers warned
Lobbyist Benjamin C. Marsh, executive secretary of the People’s Lobby, Inc., said in Washington that returning veterans who buy farms will be soaked and charged that political economists who backed subsidies helped cause an impending collapse in agriculture. He cited a 12 billion dollar rise in land prices and eight billion in farmers’ intangibles since 1940 as proof prices are too high and the sector is unstable.
