Carter slams lawmakers for in-state pay raises
President Carter criticized Ohio and Illinois lawmakers who approved large pay hikes, 25 to 40 percent, as anathema to inflation fight. Chicago aldermen and Cook County also voted sizable increases. White House officials note ongoing investigations by the Council on Wage and Price Stability and potential actions as available. Ohio lawmakers had approved a raise to 22,500 dollars annually after a 53-37 House vote.
