Hay Buying Funds Run Low, USDA Says
The Agriculture Department warns emergency hay funds are nearly exhausted to ship livestock feed to drought states. Eight billion dollars from the president’s fund was to cover through February 1, but additional states and self-supply shortages have raised needs. Many supplying states face rainfall shortages and reluctance to part with hay, raising shipping costs. A report to governors and lawmakers notes about half a million tons were requested through November 14, with about half shipped from Midwest states. Railroads have not cut freight rates despite repeated appeals. Supplying states include Illinois Iowa Michigan Minnesota Wisconsin. Drought states requesting aid include Alabama Arkansas Georgia Kentucky Mississippi Missouri Oklahoma Tennessee Texas North Carolina and Louisiana.
