Britain to drop flour subsidies in wheat export deal

The Agriculture Department said it will end flour export subsidies to Great Britain and Ireland as part of a 20 million bushel wheat sale. The move, requested by British millers, aims to curb American milling competition under Secretary Wallace’s plan to ship 100 million bushels of surplus wheat this year. The subsidy drop coincides with tariff removal on January 1, reducing federal subsidies. About 65 million bushels have been exported under the program. The surplus commodities corporation now pays roughly 22 cents per bushel in wheat subsidies and about $1.05 per barrel for flour.
