Pilot Training Boost Aims to Ease Shortages in 1968
Secretary of Defense McNamara authorized large scale increases in pilot training for the navy and air force to offset Vietnam driven shortages. The air force will add a ninth training base and accelerate programs to produce 375 pilots in fiscal 1968, with base output rising to 2,920 trainees next year. Navy bases at Pensacola Meridian and Corpus Christi will increase output from 1,800 this year to about 2,200 in 1968 and 2,500 in 1969. Army training is also expected to rise from about 4,000 to 7,300 in 1968 with funds for more planes and equipment. The Pentagon cites efforts to prevent carrier pilot recalls and notes high costs to train jets. De Gaulle appeals for a united Europe and closer Soviet ties during Kosygin visit.
