Meskwaki Leader Seeks Break With Cattle Congress
Meskwaki Tribal Council Chairman David Old Bear Sr said the tribe owes nothing to the National Cattle Congress and aims to end the relationship. In 1996 the tribe bailed out the NCC with casino revenue totaling 9.1 million dollars in exchange for a mortgage on Waterloo Greyhound Park and fairgrounds, potentially giving the tribe title if slot machines return without tribal consent. NCC officials seek mortgage release after losing racing license and $1 million yearly simulcast revenue due to tribal interference. Old Bear, newly named tribal chairman, notes moves to tighten tribal control amid recalls and suspensions of consultants and casino managers, with replacements to be elected this month.
