American Family Missing After World Cruise Launch

The Japanese coast guard ordered a search for the 35-foot two masted sailboat Phoenix carrying Dr. Earl Reynolds, his wife Barbara, and children Ted and Jessica, plus a three-member Japanese crew. They departed Hiroshima in mid October and last reached Awaji Island on October 28. The vessel aimed to circumnavigate the globe over two to three years and may have an auxiliary engine but lacked clear radio confirmation.

Lovesick Gunman Killed by Police In Theater Fight

In Los Angeles a 26 year old from North Bend Oregon died on the stage of an empty burlesque theater after opening fire during a confrontation with police trying to arrest him. He clutched pictures of a dancer he called my red headed angel and was shot as officers returned fire.

Internal Revenue Official Indicted in Omaha Case

A federal grand jury in Omaha indicted G. Elmer Brown, Philadelphia internal revenue official, for perjury in testimony related to his official duties. Brown, named executive assistant to the regional inspector of the IRS in Philadelphia, was taken into custody after being in Omaha as a witness.

Trucker Paul Vratny Dies in Illinois Crash

Paul Vratny a 28 year old Cedar Rapids truck driver was killed in a head on collision near St Charles Illinois on icy highway 64 47. Duane Altenberg 28 of Lena Illinois also died in the crash which started a fire and left five other people hospitalized.

Teenage Iowa Girls Win Grand and Reserve at Livestock Expo

Two teenaged girls from Iowa dominated the 55th International Livestock Exposition finals, winning grand with Shorty, an 1 080 pound Aberdeen Angus shown by 16 year old Janice Hullinger of Manly, and reserve with Salty, a 1120 pound red summer yearling raised by 15 year old Barbara Claussen of Spencer. Shorty sparked tears as Janice cried on stage after being named top steer, with a $375 prize and silver trophies. Shorty will be auctioned Thursday, and Janice plans to fund a farm water system with the proceeds.

Chicago firm offers free plumbing for Janice Hulinger home

The Crane Company of Chicago pledged to install an entire plumbing system free of charge for Janice Hulinger of Iowa after her Angus steer Shorty won the grand championship at the International Livestock Exposition. Senior VP F. F. Elliott said Janice only must show where to start and the work will be done gratis, with up to five baths possible.

Plane missing since Tuesday sightings raise survivor hopes

Wreckage sighted near Berlin New Hampshire five miles north of the airport. An AP radio message, identified as from the Northeast Airlines plane missing since Tuesday, places the craft in wilderness and suggests at least one survivor among seven aboard.

Typhoon Tilda struck the China sea area on Wednesday leaving one dead and 119 missing. In Iloilo 720 families were reported homeless as the storm caused damage and displacement.

Stores Open Thursday Night Until 9 o Clock

Most Cedar Rapids stores will stay open until 9 p.m. Thursday for Christmas shoppers. On recommendation of the Retail Merchants bureau of the Chamber of Commerce, most stores will also hold evening hours on Thursdays before Christmas and on the Saturday and Wednesday prior to Christmas.

Snow Storm Triggers Fatal Crashes Across Iowa

A winter snowstorm caused a wave of traffic accidents across northern Iowa with at least two deaths. Clarence Peterson of Decorah and Harley Lentz of Dunlap died after icy roads and slippery streets led to vehicle collisions. Numerous injuries were reported as highways froze and drivers slipped on packed snow.

Paris officials reported that in the French national assembly a stability statute was approved after four years of consideration. The reform bill, backed by Premier Mendes France, passed 412 to 141 and makes it easier to install a new premier while making dismissal harder. It becomes law upon presidential signature by Coty.
