Iowa forecast Generally fair with warm Sunday and cooler Monday. Highs near 42 degrees. Wind directions and airport readings listed. Local court reports include drunkenness since Friday with several sentences, intoxication and traffic violations. Obituaries note several deaths in Cedar Rapids area with funeral details.
Don Key reports the McKinley high school production of Victor Herbert’s Sweethearts impressed a capacity audience. Directed by Paul Anthony the show featured about 150 chorus members performing tunes like On Parade Pretty as a Picture and Every Lover Must Meet His Fate with a planned repeat performance Monday at 8 p.m. Tickets available at the door.
A local production presented the operetta Little Wooden Shoes with a strong quartet performance. Sally Keith as Sylvia and Bill Westerhoff as Prince Franz delivered convincing leads while JoAnne David as Mother Goose and Gary Johnson as Mikel provided notable comic moments. The ensemble included Milton Kopecky Jim Baker David Nelson and many others delivering lively humor and solid musical accompaniment.
A Detroit to Chicago passenger train and a Sunoco gasoline truck collided at a grade crossing two miles east of Kalamazoo. Six people were hurt including three passengers, two crewmen, and the truck driver George E. Johnson. The 8000 gallon truck exploded and fire trapped over 150 passengers in ten flaming coaches. Conductor William Kehrer ordered passengers to move to the head end to escape the blaze.
The National Labor Relations Board ordered J I Case plant workers in Bettendorf Iowa to vote within 30 days. Electricians will decide on joining the AFL CIO United Auto Workers. Production workers will vote on affiliating with the CIO UAW.
New York Times chief Washington correspondent Arthur Krock accused the Truman administration of blaming the free press when major events cause confusion. He cited a Washington Key West AP dispatch on a Korea armistice stance and urged precise factual denials without misstating orders from high authorities.
Seven hundred high school students presented the Franklin Frolics show in Abbott auditorium. Directors Richard C. Hubacek and Paul H. Schoenbeck led a four part performance celebrating autumn Christmas Easter and vacation. Performers included Pam Alyn Schoenbeck Barbara Mixon James Deal and many others in a lively home grown program.
Miss Cecelia Kelsey, 22, of Davenport, died in a two car crash on the outskirts of Davenport. Four others were injured: Charles Sharp 20, his wife 19, David Stull 21, and Don Paulsen 22, all Davenport residents. Stull survived to tell police. Mrs Sharp was taken to Mercy hospital.
Polk county coroner Dr. A. E. Shaw said there will be no inquest into the death of Laurence Hogbin a 10 year old boy who died Friday from a fractured skull after his bicycle collided with an auto in Des Moines.
In New Hampton a 55 year old brake man for the Great Western railroad, Emery G Barr of St Paul, was crushed to death Friday night while switching cars in the yards. Authorities investigated the fatal accident and the family was notified.
Charles W. Griffith age died Friday while visiting Keith Smith in Texas after which his body will be returned to Cedar Rapids for burial. Funeral arrangements are not yet complete.
Richard T. Ryan of 1040 Fifth Avenue SE dies Thursday. Requiem Mass will be at Immaculate Conception Church at 9 a.m. Monday, with burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Knights of Columbus Rosary events and parish organizations gathered at Brady Mortuary for visitation.
Milford Matthews 81 of Cedar Rapids died at home after a brief illness. Retired steamfitter born January 4, 1870 in Kennyville Michigan. Survived by children Robert and James. five daughters. two brothers. a sister. 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral Tuesday 1:30 p.m. Beatty chapel with Rev. F L Hinshaw. burial Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday after 1 p.m.
An early alarm saved Hanawalt school in Des Moines from major damage when a fire started in the principal's office. Firemen found a waste basket set afire under a table on the second floor. drawers were opened and papers scattered. Authorities say the building could have burned if not discovered. The school had been entered through a basement window covered by wire mesh.
Gov. Karl Warren was discharged from the University of California hospital days after undergoing an appendectomy on November 21. The discharge follows the successful operation and expected recovery.
Kenneth Averill died after a forced shower post weigh in Cedar Rapids. Coach Wilson described weight-cutting pressures and rapid dieting amid calls for medical guidance and weight policy reforms in local youth sports.
Joseph B. Coonan was fined $10 and costs for leaving the scene of an accident and for license restriction violations. Douglas Slife’s and Matt E Lytle’s vehicles were involved in separate collisions with police and on slippery pavement. Marilyn Keller received treatment for a forehead cut after a Fifth Avenue Seventh Street SE crash, with Robert Shull fined $5 for loss of vehicle control. Charles De Mar was the other involved driver.
About 75 percent of the interior of W. H. Pollock's home at 1325 Twentieth avenue SW was ruined by a Friday night fire. The blaze started in a bedroom. investigators had not determined its cause. Companies 4 and 5 and aerial No. 2 fought the flames for 45 minutes before extinguishing.
Police were called early Saturday over a housing mix up that led to a strange sighting in a residence. James McCarthy, 118 A avenue, was involved in the incident as the occupant of the home.
Helen M. Sellers 38 of 41% Sixth street SE pled guilty to larceny after admitting she took a $72 billfold from a Cedar Rapids dime store purse. A four month suspended sentence in Linn County Jail was imposed by Judge Charles Penningroth. The purse owner was Evelyn Merritt of Viola.
Judge William Matias meted 80 days in jail to four defendants on drunkenness charges in Cedar Rapids police court. Ralph T. Ream, at large, got 30 days on an intoxication charge after being arrested in the Union Depot lunch room. S. Ramirez received 30 days in city jail for peace violations amid a wife signed complaint. Herbert F. Hubbard drew 15 days for drunkenness after refusing to leave a local restaurant. Helen P. Cunningham earned five days after a resturant pickup. One charge against Clarence Knoebel was continued after a plea of innocent. complainant Marie Snider said Knoebel used obscene language and assaulted her and her daughter with a shotgun, despite a gun permit.
In Cedar Rapids traffic court Saturday two men were fined for reckless driving. Albert Hubbard of 3440 Oakland road NE received the maximum $100 fine and a recommended 60 day license suspension.
