Alligators Bring News and Crowds to Cedar Rapids Hotel
In 1886 two men and a Florida gator attracted large crowds to a Cedar Rapids hotel. The beast, shipped north, drew praise and ridicule as Faulkes used the display to aid charity efforts while officials fretted over safety and the crowd. The animal later died, prompting a $25 reward for identification of its death cause.
