Crime stats may mislead police warn

Iowa City and Cedar Rapids police warn that crime rates tied to small areas can distort the view of neighborhoods. A Gazette analysis finds 11.5 percent of Iowa City’s calls for burglary theft from vehicle theft of a vehicle and assault originate from Broadway Hollywood Boulevard and Taylor Drive and from three student-dominated streets. The Broadway area, part of the Wetherby Neighborhood, saw 1,961 calls in 2002. In Cedar Rapids Wellington Heights posted the city’s most arrests in 2002 with 820 of 9,773, while Cedar Hills and Kenwood led in other crime types. Police say origins aside from residence are not tracked and anecdotal patterns do not prove broader trends.
