Line No keeper near Anamosa Bill Sperry of Marion fishes at Wapsipinicon State Park in Anamosa on Thursday. He says he fishes for fun and returns everything to the water. He also fishes on the Mississippi River about weekly using a boat.
Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack and challenger Doug Gross traded barbs over the economy as Moody's affirmed Iowa's high credit rating. Vilsack touted the rating while Gross accused him of raiding funds to balance the budget and called for more highway spending to aid blue collar workers. Polls show a dead heat as Labor Day approaches.
A University of Northern Iowa study by William Downs links domestic violence and substance abuse among Iowa women. About 67 percent in treatment faced domestic violence and 93 percent suffered psychological abuse in the last six months, with one-third to one-half of shelter residents also having substance issues. The Conjoint Services Project, funded by a Justice Department grant, aims to improve cross referrals and reduce service demand across agencies in Iowa.
A year after Leticia Aguilar and her five children were slain in Sioux City a fence bears flowers candles and notes. Adam Moss pled guilty to the killings and is serving seven life terms. The Aguilar home was donated to Neighborhood Network to fund a children's park with playground equipment to honor the victims.
Cornell College in Mount Vernon launches a Year of Good Will with about 400 volunteers from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. across 30 sites including five Goodwill locations. The event marks the centennial of Goodwill founded by Rev. Edgar Helms class of 1889 who started the program in Boston in 1902.
Iowa State University President Gregory Geoffroy leads an alumni fundraising push to preserve Morrill Hall. The 112 year old campus building could house a textiles and clothing program and a Christian Petersen collection and Art on Campus Program if donor pledges meet targets.
