USDA criticizes middlemen for not passing savings to shoppers
The USDA blames meat processors and distributors for not passing on lower farm prices to consumers as beef and pork retail prices fail to reflect declines. Officials cite higher middleman costs and stronger promotions as factors, while industry groups argue margins and costs limit price cuts. Beef and cattle prices fell sharply while hog profits lingered. July and August retail data show beef near 1.35 per pound, with farm value and middleman shares outlined.
