Ninety three percent of parents of college students believe alcohol is too easily accessible on and near campuses. Ex Iowa quarterback Jon Beutjer says he left the Hawkeye program after feeling betrayed by his coaches.
A Iowa statewide report notes ethanol production will inject about $156 million into the state economy and create 976 jobs. The surge aligns with regional growth in Jackson County and Bellevue Maquoketa.
Public Safety Commissioner David Zahn endorsed the city’s financial package for a new Hy-Vee in the 1500 block of First Avenue NE. The plan would replace the century old cramped store serving Wellington Heights and Mound View, securing required council votes. Zahn backs a Hy-Vee development near downtown despite concerns over a 915000 city contribution. The plan aims to revitalize near downtown neighborhoods and will use increased property tax revenue from the site and the urban renewal district to recoup the investment.
St. Luke's Ambulatory Surgical Unit in Cedar Rapids will open September 10 with about eight million dollars from the hospital and local doctors. The center at 1075 First Ave SE has four operating rooms and two procedure rooms and will handle arthroscopic surgeries cataract removal ear tube insertions and colonoscopies among other procedures.
Residents debated a 6.1 million Vision Iowa grant proposal to fund a hotel golf course trail improvements and a winter park in Marquette and McGregor. Critics warned of environmental damage and casino benefits while supporters urged regional tourism growth and small town revitalization. The Vision Iowa board will decide this fall.
State budget officials call the $7.6 million negative balance through June a snapshot pending year-end closings. Dennis Prouty cautions the figure could rise or fall with reversions accruals and refunds. Gov. Vilsack aides stress overall state finances remain solid with nearly $500 million in black reserves.
