Cedar Rapids city council plans to decide today if it will sign a deal to take over the 7 acre former Iowa Steel plant at 415 12th Ave SE from Cedarapids Inc and St Wenceslaus Church. If approved the city would gain possession Oct 1 and clear the site by Jan 31 2001 while repaying a 450000 CEBA loan portion and Cedarapids remaining 581800 loan.
Cedarapids Inc owners of the 415 12th Ave. SE site donate seven acres to St. Wenceslaus Church. The church will transfer title to the city with a small parcel kept for parking. The city will raze the plant and prepare the site for development by Jan. 31. Cedarapids will pay the state 78800 and avoid 52900 in interest if it maintains 300 Cedar Rapids jobs for three years as part of a CEBA loan obligation.
Census Bureau estimates show Benton County rank second in Iowa growth with a 15 percent rise, Dallas County 28.4 percent, Linn 9.6 percent, Johnson 8 percent, and Washington 7.8 percent, as Des Moines and Cedar Rapids metro areas lead in population gains and child counts rise unevenly.
The census note reports Linn County as the second-largest with 184,891 residents and Johnson County fifth with 103,813. It states 52 of Iowa’s 99 counties declined while Dallas and Benton counties are predicted to grow the most due to access to both urban and rural benefits.
