Weekend Iowa Crashes Claim Eleven Lives Across State
The Associated Press reports at least 11 Iowans died in weekend crashes across Iowa. Victims include Esther Barr, 73, of Vinton, and Alma Rizer, 79, who perished after Barr pulled into a Rock Island freight train at Shellsburg. John Putnam, 16, of Bellevue, died when his car struck a bridge abutment on U.S. 52. Others killed were Marlys Mohn, 15, of Moorhead. Elsie Mott, 75, and John Mott, 81, of rural Boone. Gayle Smith, 20, of Esterville. Paul Heizer, 19, of Bettendorf. Dewey Johnson, 23, of New Hartford. Gary Buckley, 17, of Ogden. and Albert Degner, 69, near Newell in separate incidents.

Truck Hits Bike Injures Oelwein Boy
Paul Levendusky dusky eight year old son of Mr and Mrs Robert Levendusky of Oelwein remained in good condition with a broken pelvis in Oelwein hospital Monday after a bicycle was struck from behind by a truck driven by Mark Langel eighteen of Oelwein. Langel swerved to miss the Levendusky dog and struck the boy at the southwest edge of Oelwein.

Iowa-born newsman dies in Albuquerque at 86
Homer P. Pickrell, Oskaloosa native and longtime Albuquerque Journal editor, died Sunday in Albuquerque. He began his 64-year journalism career as a reporter, edited the Journal for 37 years until retiring in 1964, and previously worked for the Wichita Beacon Chicago Record-Herald and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch before arriving in Albuquerque in 1919. Pickrell was nominated to the New Mexico Newspaper Hall of Fame in 1968.
