Iowa researchers outline silage limits for beef cows
Iowa State University researchers at Cattle Feeders Day report that fall silage sampling shows cows need protein supplements and energy feed to maintain weight. Vitamin A and minerals enable grazing corn stalks for 100 to 120 days. Stover silage yields 4400 pounds per acre and 36 percent of digestible nutrients stay in the field. The study notes potential profitability from using stalks and cobs on nearly ten million corn acres.
