Clinton Iowa municipal court and state authorities field numerous requests from Davenport Cedar Rapids and DeWitt for adopting seven children left behind by Francis John Smith and May Jean Schaefer Smith who were jailed on child desertion and neglect charges after taking a misbegotten ride from a DeWitt motel. The couple 53 and 27 were married in Missouri then arrested in Keokuk Iowa as the children aged 2 to 12 faced food scarcity and minimal cash. Foster care houses the children while relatives in Fort Wayne Ind. may seek custody after the Smiths’ case concludes.
In New Brunswick New Jersey a court must decide who receives gifts from a 1956 wedding shower after Miss Bodnar and Thomas Kucharsky canceled engagement. Bodnar seeks return of 750 dollars worth of gifts. Kucharsky claims ownership since both names appeared on the invites.
Cleveland AP Edsel made an early appearance on a used-car lot Friday despite not being released to the public for five days. In Brainerd Minnesota three farm boys aged 15 13 and 10 confessed to killing their father Richard Aamodt 56 claiming he maltreated them. The brothers Richard Billy and Ira were sent to Red Wing State Training School by the Minnesota Youth Commission after their Thursday confession.

Jean Listebarger 28 of Fairfax named Iowa Teacher of the Year from 15 nominees. A second grade teacher at Edwards School Ames she is a 1947 Roosevelt High graduate and Mt. Vernon alumna. Nominated by Mrs. E P Swanson Ames she will enter a national contest with the March winner to be announced. Her work includes challenging advanced students while aiding others and she is active in Methodist church youth programs.
Wendl Rehder and C Ira Lewis, members of the Farmers Mutual Telephone Company of Palo, seek an injunction and receiver to stop alleged unauthorized payments. Defendants include president A P Rankin and secretary treasurer Norma McVey along with other officers as a Palo Cooperative Telephone Association forms to take over operations. The petition claims no service is being rendered and assets may disappear without restraint. Judge Charles Penningroth set September 5 at 9 a.m. for a hearing.
Two wills with numerous beneficiaries were admitted to probate. The Balderston will, dated Aug 18, leaves 8000 to sister Osie Bell plus real estate and life policy proceeds, with 60 acres to grandnephews Keith Claire and Randy Balderston after death. Helen Brooks of Rochester gets 3000 and furnishings. The Mayo Association of Rochester and Prairie Chapel Church receive sums for charity. Rest to be divided among legatees in proportion to shares. Vernon Brockman confirmed executor without bond. The Tyson will, dated Aug 19, names twenty-two relatives. Mina Burk receives 3000, a cousin Gertrude Hahn and nephew Harold Huey get 1000 each, Huey also gets two promissory notes, rest to nineteen nieces and nephews including Robert Huey and Ruth Sweet of Cedar.
William Porter, 50, of 1614 K avenue NE, was charged in district court Friday afternoon with drunk driving after a 3:50 am two car crash at First avenue and Third street East. Three people were injured, including Porter who had a head cut, Virginia Mc Cauley 36, of 1918 B street SW with a broken right knee, and Edward Jandl 38, of 2486 Second street SW with bruises.
A $1,500 personal injury suit was filed in Linn district court Friday against the All-Iowa fair sponsor, Florence Boyds alleging foot ankle leg and knee injuries from a fall in August 1921 on All-Iowa Agricultural Association property. The association, a Cedar Rapids Chamber subsidiary, runs the All-Iowa fair at Hawkeye Downs.
J. F. Anderson Lumber Company filed suit Thursday against Ronald and Shirley Crawford for 713.31 and two foreclosures of a mechanic lien. Gerald Niederhauser of Mount Vernon dismissed a 156.98 auto damage suit. Defendants include Robert and Marion Lind of Lisbon. Robert Lind dismissed a 25 counterclaim against Niederhauser.
DES MOINES AP The Iowa State Commerce Commission scheduled hearings for September 24 in the statehouse on 23 petitions from public utility firms for transmission lines across many Iowa counties. Included are Iowa Electric Light and Power Co Cedar Rapids for 364 miles in Jones Benton Clinton Linn Buena Vista and Cedar, Illinois Gas and Electric Co Davenport for 23.85 miles in Scott County and Interstate Power Co Dubuque for .75 mile in Cerro Gordo County.

Congress proposes to allow federal troops to enforce civil rights court orders and to drop state qualification rules for federal jurors, enabling broader Black jury participation. The bill imposes up to a 1000 dollar fine or one year in jail for unauthorized disclosure of Civil Rights Commission secrets, with penalties limited to commission employees, not newsmen.
The foreign aid bill totals 2.7687 billion in new money plus 667.05 million left unspent from last year. A Cedar Rapids man, James Rossey, 26, becomes the first reported victim of Missouri’s new highway speed law enacted midnight Tuesday. Rossey was arrested 15 miles south of Cameron on U S 69 for driving 80 to 85 mph as the state sets speed limits of 70 on divided federal highways and 65 on undivided routes. His case resumes in Plattsburg court Saturday, with potential rulings on suppression and mistrial if government resists disclosure.
Iowa reports six more traffic deaths bringing the 1957 toll to 459 with 21 killed since last weekend. Victims include Elwin Hatcher 29 of Pacific Junction and Wayne Collins 44 of LeMars among others. Hatcher died in a two car head on crash on highway 34 near Glenwood Friday injuring four. Collins died from injuries after a truck overturned near Pomeroy. Cooper 71 of Boone killed in a two car crash at a gravel road intersection near Boone. Breeden 66 of Kellogg killed in a jeep truck collision on highway 156 north of Grinnell. Benson 47 of Ventura died from injuries in an August auto crash near Rockwell City. Mrs Knowles 37 of Bradyville killed when her car collided with a truck near Bradyville.
Recruiters in Cedar Rapids reported Friday the enlistment of three men two of whom are veterans. James E. Phillips 21 of 938 Fifteenth Avenue SW joined for military police duty and heads to Fort Carson Colorado. Jack L. Dutrt 18 of 2011 Second Street SW enlisted with the Third Division in Germany and will train at Fort Benning Georgia. Richard M. Hawkins 23 of Marengo joined the air force as an airman first class, a Marine Corps veteran, headed to the missile test center at Patrick Air Force Base Florida.
The bill would admit about 60,000 aliens while denying permanent status to about 27,000 Hungarian refugees and leaving the origins quotas plan unresolved. It revives 18,656 unused visas including 14,000 for communists and Middle East persecution victims, eases reentry for 27,000 relatives, waives fingerprint checks for visitors, and allows unlimited orphans over two years.
Dr. Wendell Johnson of the University of Iowa was named to the National Advisory Council on Vocational Rehabilitation. He is a professor of speech pathology and psychology at Iowa. The appointment was announced Friday by Secretary of Welfare Folsom.
Agriculture department reports prices paid for farm products rose four tenths of 1 percent from mid-July to mid-August. Farmers paid average prices were unchanged from mid-July and were 3 percent higher than mid-August last year.

Glen William Chapek a Cedar Rapids resident and Collins Radio Company employee died Thursday after a brief illness. Born May 9 1903 in Richmond Ia he married Nona Cook January 13 1945 in Marion. Surviving are his wife his mother Mrs Ed Stupka a sister Mrs Otto Werner a Cedar Rapids stepdaughter Mrs Norine Jelinek and stepson William L Powell all of Cedar Rapids. He belonged to St Patrick church and IBEW Local 1362 at Collins. Services will be at St Patrick church Tuesday at 9 am and burial at Cedar Memorial with a rosary Monday at 7 pm in Turner chapel. Friends may call at the chapel.
Services were held Tuesday at Las Vegas for Lyle Adams former Cedar Rapids resident and bricklayer. Affiliated with St. Ludmila's church he is survived by his wife Catherine and a son Jimmie Joe.
Oliver M. Camp 69 of Marion route 1 took his own life Friday at 8 a.m. The Linn county coroner said Camp’s body was found at 8:35 a.m. in a bedroom where he roomed, with a 20 gauge shotgun nearby. The coroner ruled the death as self-inflicted. Camp, a former Wilson and Company employee, was born April 25, 1888 in Kansas. Surviving are three sons and four daughters. Funeral services to be announced at Beatty-Bearle chapel with burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Saturday.
CHICAGO AP report says highway deaths in July fell to 3,320 from 3,570 a year earlier, a drop of 250. The National Safety Council notes July marked the eighth straight month of declines or no change, with year-to-date figures about 3 percent below 1956.
