Four Drowned At Ottumwa Des Moines River Tragedy
Four Ottumwa residents two men and two boys died when their boat overturned four miles northwest of the city on the Des Moines river Sunday. Howard Morehouse 37 and his son William 10 and Lawrence Findley about 30 perished. Lester Morehouse survived by holding onto the overturned craft. Billy Flood 16 and Ernest Peek nearly drowned as Flood stepped into a deep hole. Both boys could not swim and were among the victims. Howard Morehouse and Findley worked at Morrell packing plant.

The Iowa state board of social welfare announced increases for old-age assistance and aid-to-blind checks starting in November. About 48,600 recipients will see $3.25 more monthly, raising the average old-age payment from $43.63 to $46.88, and about 1,500 aid-to-blind recipients from $47.20 to $50.45. Aid to dependent children payments will drop from roughly $28 to about $20 monthly due to limited funds, with a $340,000 emergency grant approved to sustain the program through January at the new level.
