Flooding follows storm in Oelwein
A late August thunderstorm dumped up to six inches of rain in about two hours in Oelwein, flooding streets and basements. Otter Creek flooded West Charles Street with two feet of water, damaging homes and vehicles and causing power outages as downed lines cut sump pumps. Police report the event worst since 1923 with wind damage to trees, windows, and businesses and sewers backing up before crews pumped water from the Fire Department and a city office building.
