Senate backs $55,000 crop subsidy cap for big cotton farms

The Senate agriculture committee backed a three year farm support bill imposing a $55,000 per crop limit on subsidies to large cotton, wheat and feed grain growers. Critics expect a floor fight over lowering the cap to $20,000 per farm. An amendment would aid small farmers with buyouts, cash payments, and retraining grants up to 2500 dollars plus aid.

Japanese Teachers to Observe Iowa Methods in Schools

Des Moines AP report says 42 Japanese English teachers arrive in Iowa for two and a half weeks to study instructional methods in junior and senior high schools. They will be hosted by families and assigned to equal level schools in Des Moines Marshalltown New Hampton and other towns. The program aims to foster understanding of Japanese people and customs.

Still Signing Up at Kirkwood College

Registration for arts and sciences students at Kirkwood College continues at Linnhall with hours 9 30 a m to 4 p m on Monday and 8 15 to 11 a m and 1 to 2 30 p m on Tuesday. Adult evening college registration is set for Monday 7 to 8 p m. James Miller notes late registration at Linn Tall next Wednesday through Friday and Sept 4. Earlier applicants should still register even without acceptance letters due to high summer volumes.

Federal investigators report continuing Medicaid payments to California nursing homes with serious compliance problems. GAO found not all corrective actions were effective. many facilities lacked signed physician orders and proper drug destruction records. Student Given Fine Sentenced On Drug Charge

Kenneth Joseph Lynch, 21, of Dallas, was fined 300 dollars and sentenced to two years in the Anamosa men's reformatory for illegal possession of marijuana. The case tied to a December 22, 1968 airport seizure and a prior California conviction. Lynch pled guilty, then denied, and faced counts of possession for personal use and second offense. The second offense charge never went to trial due to witness issues from California.

Woman Given Suspended Sentence For Marijuana Possession

Verleen Eidsmoe aged 20 of 1416 Hollywood Boulevard NE received a six month suspended sentence in Linn district court after pleading guilty to possession of marijuana. She was arrested on August 22.

Safety Head Meets Police Over 1971 Budget

Cedar Rapids Police Protective Assn members met with Safety Commissioner John Oberthien to push for a council meeting on the police department budget. Oberthien plans to seek council action on arranging the session after the association asked for a meeting. On Aug 5 Chief George Matias warned the proposed $1,450,000 police budget for 1971 would not cover operating costs.

Conference on Aging Coordinator Is Named

Earl Nelson, executive secretary of the state commission of the aging, was named to coordinate Iowa activities for a national conference on elderly problems. Governor Ray said Nelson will organize hearings through the state to identify senior citizens needs and secure assistance for a full rewarding life.

James B. Surrett aged 26 from 999 Eleventh Street SW was bound over to the grand jury after a preliminary hearing in municipal court on a manslaughter charge. The case concerns the death of Larry L. Johnston aged 32 of Springville after an incident at Queenies Pub in Lisbon in July. Johnston died from a massive brain hemorrhage due to a head blow.
