I C man surrenders in Chicago after global manhunt

Ali Younes 21 fled from Iowa City to Jordan in May 2023 to avoid prosecution for a 2022 assault robbery and attempted murder. He was taken into custody at O’Hare and will be extradited to Iowa. He faces charges of attempted murder first degree robbery and theft with potential 60 year prison term. He could also be charged with escape by a felon.

Mercy Medical Center Cedar Rapids wins NOtice of need exemption

The State Health Facilities Council unanimously ruled Mercy Medical Center Cedar Rapids does not need a certificate of need to establish an off site location in North Liberty. Mercy argues the ambulatory surgical center will operate under the Cedar Rapids hospital license and Medicare provider number. The plan targets inpatient and outpatient hospital services for North Liberty’s 21 000 residents.

Harrison to be expanded but funding unclear

Cedar Rapids Harrison Elementary will be renovated and expanded instead of razed with work possibly by fall 2027. The plan reverses last year's decision to demolish the historic school, after a district survey and a failed multi million dollar bond referendum. The board now approves a yearlong design phase as funding remains unresolved.
