Rim fire wreaks ecological toll in Stanislaus region
John Buckley tracks the Rim fire across Stanislaus National Forest and Yosemite, warning that 161000 acres burned threaten old growth in the Stanislaus and chaparral, with nesting habitats for California spotted owls and goshawks at risk. Researchers note centuries-old pines may die as firefighting and past logging altered fire regimes.
