Submarine Pacocha Sinks After Collision Near Callao

Twenty one sailors were rescued from the crippled submarine Pacocha using a diving bell after it sank in 96 feet of water near Callao Peru following an accidental collision with the Japanese fishing boat No 8 Kyowa Maru. Four sailors died and three remained missing. President Alan Garcia said three men were unconscious and may have been overcome by fumes.

Marchers commemorate King dream on 25th anniversary

Miles From Home offers decent portrayal of Rowans

Journalists saw a screening of Miles From Home filmed near Cedar Rapids. The film opens Sept 16 in Cedar Rapids Des Moines NYC Chicago and LA with other cities to follow. It follows two Iowa brothers as they face foreclosure after their father’s death. The script by Chris Gerolmo and direction by Gary Sinise present a guarded tribute to farming and family without heavy sentiment. Richard Gere stars as Frank opposing a banker.

Teleconnect to Hire 200 for Subsidiary in Cedar Rapids

Teleconnect Co of Cedar Rapids will add 200 workers to Teleconnect Data Base Marketing Co the fund raising division. The Development Services Division has begun a new recruitment drive to meet demand. Once filled the division will reach 800 employees making the subsidiary the fastest growing Teleconnect unit. Teleconnect employs about 2400 people overall and plans to merge with SouthernNet Inc of Atlanta to form a large long distance services firm.

Racing dog drug violations rise at Iowa tracks

Drug violations among greyhounds at Iowa's three tracks rose sharply with 89 positive urine tests from January to July, nearly triple 1987's total of 65. If the rate persists, year-end violations could exceed 175, though officials say the findings do not affect dogs' speed.
