Black Delegates Plan Favorite Son Protest at Democratic Convention
Black delegates in Chicago announce a protest vote for Rev. Channing Phillips as a favorite son candidate at the Democratic national convention. The move aims to voice anger over unseating two Deep South delegations and likely won’t dent Humphrey’s lead, with Rep. Conyers backing Phillips and Rep. Diggs predicting little impact. Phillips notes the protest targets political expediency, and Bond remains uncommitted as Georgia and Alabama delegations face split votes.

Pentagon slows F-111 production to save funds
The Pentagon will stretch out construction and delivery of F-111A and F-111 jets to save 201 million this budget year as part of a 6 billion dollar spending cut ordered by Congress. Initial deliveries remain on schedule but overall force buildup will be extended. An additional 18 million is saved by faster deactivation of seven F-101 squadrons and closing Paine Field. The move reduces Air Force manpower by 2,661, cuts 372 civilian jobs and 126 active duty aircraft.
