Hog Prices May Hold Up Better Than Last Year

Freeman Eyes Compulsory Farm Bargaining Plan

Secretary of Agriculture Orville Freeman works on legislation to place farmers under a price bargaining system like that for labor under the National Labor Relations Act. A national farm bargaining board would hold elections to select bargaining agencies for agricultural commodities and require all producers to support and adhere to group agreements. Buyers would bargain in good faith, and groups could call for withholding of commodities.

Hog Producers Plan 3 Percent Cut in Sow Farrowings

Hog producers aimed to trim June through November sow farrowings by 3 percent from 1966 levels. Improved hog prices could halt further cuts as the hog corn price ratio looks favorable for fall. Expectations point to good profits in 1968, though 1969 may vary. Feed costs are expected to be cheaper than recent years, aiding profitability. Memories of last spring’s low prices should curb over expansion.
