UNI Freshman Dies After Shower Collapse
An 18 year old University of Northern Iowa freshman Kevin A. Reedy of Council Bluffs died after collapsing in a shower at UNI Cancer Residence Hall. He was found unconscious about 3 30 a m Sunday and pronounced dead at Sartori Memorial Hospital. Death is under investigation as students return to campus for a new academic year.

Fire Destroys Cedar Rapids Home. Man In Critical Condition
A northeast Cedar Rapids man, 54 year old Charles Widener, was in critical condition after a Saturday fire at his 4251 E Ave NE home. Neighbors called 911 after seeing flames around 9 p.m. firefighters rescued Widener, who was alone in the house. the cause is under investigation.

Waterloo teen admits drinking before fatal head-on crash
A 16-year-old driver, Alexander D. Smith of Waterloo, admitted to drinking and speeding before a head-on collision in the 4000 block of West Fourth Street. John Swartzendruber, 21, died at Covenant Medical Center. Smith and other passengers were hospitalized as police continued the investigation. Swartzendruber was not related to school district official Arlis Swartzendruber.

John G. O Brink, 36, of Waukon, was charged with first degree arson after a Sunday 3 am blaze heavily damaged a building on his street. Firefighters found the structure fully engulfed with flames spreading to adjacent buildings, causing about $750000 in damage to the Car's Place bar and second story apartments.
