U S officials said they busted a major drug operation using commercial ships to haul Colombian cocaine worldwide. Operation Journey led to 43 arrests and about 25 tons seized, with estimates of 68 tons shipped to 12 countries over three years. Venezuelan raids added 10 tons and 16 arrests. Ivan de la Vega, the alleged leader, was captured in Venezuela and handed to U S authorities.
President Clinton addressed Nigeria's National Assembly urging leaders to put aside acrimony and work with President Obasanjo to deepen democracy. He praised Obasanjo's leadership, urged balanced power between legislature and executive, and warned against letting divisions derail Nigeria's progress toward unity and development.
President Clinton launches a one stop clearinghouse on www recruitingteachers org to help schools locate qualified teachers and to help teachers find job openings. He says the site will ease the teacher shortage and reduce class sizes as 53 million students start classes nationwide. Over the next decade 2.2 million new teachers are needed with a $1 billion education budget aimed at recruitment and training.
