Doctor dies after cyanide tablet swallowed during domestic dispute

Chandler Arizona AP A 56 year old doctor Allan Lewis died after swallowing a cyanide tablet during an argument with his wife Gwen 40 She fired at a can and shattered it but he swallowed the poison in front of her The couple argued over household matters and the cyanide can used for jewelers was labeled for cleaning and stripping Police treated five paramedics exposed to fumes and released them later

Tauke Receives 1982 Public TV Commendation in Des Moines

Rep. Tom Tauke of Iowa 2nd District was honored with the National Association of Public Television Stations commendation at a Wakanda Club ceremony in Des Moines. Bruce Christensen presented the award for Tauke’s work with the Temporary Commission on Public Financing for Public Television created by the 1981 Public Broadcasting Amendments Act.

Petition seeks resurfacing of Old Muscatine Road

Cedar County Board of Supervisors received a petition from 20 landowners requesting resurfacing of Old Muscatine Road from Tipton to Sunbury Road as part of the five year road program. Officials note paving is years away with preliminary work under way. Whitmer proposed extending resurfacing to Sugar Creek Church. Also, Howard Davis named to the land use committee. In other news, U.S. Navy jets bombed Haiphong shipyards and other sites in North Vietnam.

Cedar Rapids Teen Drowns in Cedar River

John C. Lovell a 17 year old of 1523 16th Ave SE drowned early Thursday in the Cedar River about 300 yards north of the Five in One Dam Complex. He was recovered at 3 35 a m after fire crews dragged the river for two hours. Lovell was with friends on the west riverbank when he rolled into the water and disappeared. This makes five drownings in the Cedar River in Linn County this year.

Army cuts recruitment goals and closes 23 jobs to women

The Army will add 1,000 women annually to the enlisted ranks for five years and close 23 job classifications to females. The changes follow an 18 month study amid concerns over combat readiness as women’s numbers rose in the ranks.

Nursing hopefuls camp out for Kirkwood fall program slots

Nearly 20 would be nursing program contenders camped outside Linn Hall at Kirkwood Community College awaiting 45 fall 1983 openings. Campers planned to line up by arrival time as doors open at 6 a.m and applications at 8 a.m, hoping to secure a place in the popular program.

The University of Wisconsin Extension offers a low cost correspondence course titled Family Day Care. The program costs 29 dollars plus 4 dollars for the handbook and provides one college credit. Knife Wielding Robber Holds Up Dairy Maid Store

A white male about 5 foot 6, chunky with shoulder length sandy hair robbed the Dairy Maid at 2030 Sixth St SW at 5 30 pm Thursday. He showed a pocketknife, demanded cash, fled on foot in a plaid shirt and blue jeans. the clerk was unharmed.

New Medical Administrator Named for State Penitentiary

Terri Kay Massey of Melrose is named director of Correctional Medical Services at the Iowa State Penitentiary. She replaces Warren Ingalls as he moves to Alabama. Massey brings extensive Illinois corrections experience from Cook County and Joliet facilities and joined the prison staff in March.

Illinois man dies in Clinton motorcycle crash

A rural Fulton county man Ronald Schuey 41 died after his motorcycle left a city street in Clinton struck a utility pole. Passenger Jean Sparlin 39 was injured and hospitalized.
