Terminated informant to receive jobless pay
Frederick Herrick a former Dubuque police officer and Cedar Rapids man was hired Jan 7 as a part time hotel employee to detect thefts at the J ulien Hotel Dubuque and was terminated Jan 24. An appeal and over the telephone hearing May 25 led to June 15 award of unemployment benefits which the hotel appealed past the 15 day limit prompting the Job Services appeal board July 9 to rule it had no jurisdiction due to late filing.

Hiawatha approves gas-grocery store permit
Hiawatha City Council halted new commercial work for nine months then granted a building permit for a Casey Store on Robins Road and Pirie Drive. Fred Horn of Marion is named owner of the proposed store. Last new commercial permit was in November, with prior activity dating to 1981.

St Luke's Wins Approval for Cedar Rapids Ambulatory Center
The Iowa Health Facilities Council approved a Certificate of Need for St Luke's Methodist Hospital to build a 42000 square foot same day surgery center on the second floor near existing operating rooms. The project, costing about 4.5 million, will remodel current space and add a rear section with phased construction to avoid disrupting services.
