Balloon Device Used To Circulate Blood In Cardiac Shock

Dr. Adrian Kantrowitz led a team at Maimonides Medical Center in inserting a balloon like device into the aorta of a heart attack patient in shock. The helium powered device was used during a seven hour treatment on June 29 and helped the patient recover from the acute heart attack phase. A second case in which the device was used resulted in patient death after pump repositioning. Further study is needed before the technique is certified lifesaving.
