Striking workers at Kwik-Way Manufacturing Co in Marion voted two to one for a two year contract Sunday afternoon ending a three week strike by Machinists Local 831. About half the 130 workers plan to return Wednesday and full capacity is not expected until September 4.
DES MOINES AP Two loan finding firms were ordered to cease doing business in Iowa for failing to provide disclosure and surety bond information. J R Financial Services Inc of Appleton Wisconsin and Meister Staroba Associates Inc of Oakville Ontario faced action after no disclosure statement and no evidence of a bond or trust account. The firms claim to be co brokers offering 6.5 percent money for a $2000 up front fee. The office has no known customers or losses reported.
Iowa City prepares a public hearing on a proposed ordinance banning nuclear weapons facilities and nuclear weapons work within the city. The group Nuclear Weapons Free Iowa City seeks ballot placement with 2,559 signatures if council action stalls. The measure carries penalties up to 30 days in jail and 500 dollars fine per violation.
Fire damaged the attic late last night at 1048 Staub Ct NE, Robert Eppers says his son woke him when smoke appeared. Firefighters arrived at 11 15 pm and flames were seen issuing from the attic window. Cause and extent of damage were not yet released.
