Voyager 2 enters Saturn magnetosphere amid storms
After processing signals sounded like a kid on an electric organ, Voyager 2 produced a tape via a music synthesizer. At about 1 a.m. Tuesday, Voyager 2 officially entered Saturn’s magnetosphere, a tear-shaped magnetic bubble shielding the planet from solar wind. The probe’s high resolution view shows round and pinwheeled storms on Saturn.

Inflation Seen Slipping Toward 10 Percent This Year
Inflation forecasts hold that 1981 end inflation will be about 9.9 percent with economists noting July price gains as a temporary surge driven by housing costs. Officials expect rates to ease later in the year as the economy weakens, though July marks the steepest monthly rise since March 1980.

Gas leak forces mass evacuation near Sacramento and Battery
Fire Chief Andrew Casper reported up to 30,000 people may have fled the two square block area. Pacific Gas and Electric said the gas flow to the broken main was largely shut off after leaking for more than an hour, with small seepage continuing at 4:30 p.m. Three hours after the leak began, six valves were closed to stop the leak, though officials suggested an obstruction may have hindered one valve. An oily slick covered much of the evacuation zone.
