bargaining sessions between No 1 Packinghouse Workers Organizing Committee and John Morrell and Co. resumed in Ottumwa after Friday's talks failed. The union had called a Thursday walkout over four workers suspended for refusing overtime. William Houston, federal conciliator, aided talks as optimism returned among pickets surrounding the plant.
Mrs. Marie Ready of Dubuque and her attorney traveled to Manchester to challenge the identification of the bus crash victim near Dyersville on August 18. She asserts the dying youth is her son Colbert Ready, 17, a deserter from the Solon CCC camp, while Delaware County authorities insist the victim is Norman Rasmussen, 20. Six witnesses identified the victim from a photo, and a cap near the wreckage is said to belong to Rasmussen, with officials noting Rasmussen’s actions prior to the crash matching those of the deceased.

About 16 000 children attended the Iowa State Fair on Children’s Day with four stock judging drawing crowds. Champions and high placers included James Lang Grinnell with the Ayrshire heifer, Norris Gaffney Milton with the Hereford, and Marshall county teams winning in Poland China and other cattle classes. Other winners included Guernsey, Holstein, and Shorthorn cattle from multiple counties and growers.
The dedication of Wyoming school’s new auditorium gymnasium is set for 2:30 Sunday. The $40 000 structure, funded in part by a PWA grant, replaces the old town opera house repurposed for school use. Fred Kisling a 52 year old gas station operator in Urbana died by his own hand with a rifle Saturday at about 5 30 am. He had been in ill health for some time. His son Clarence Kisling and daughter in law found the body when they checked on his condition. Surviving are his wife two sons Clarence and Carl of Urbana and a daughter Mrs Anna Harrison of Cedar Rapids. Coroner John R Burrows said no inquest would be held.

Doctors in Springfield Illinois said Jack Lum 53 a Chinese restaurant owner may undergo another period of frozen sleep a new cancer treatment. X rays from the first experiment in which Lum was packed in cracked ice for five days show changes but a full evaluation may take 30 to 60 days. Lum has shown marked progress since waking Tuesday night from voluntary hibernation.
