Old St. Michael’s Church Preserved by Holbrook Friends
In Holbrook near Amana the 1867 Old St. Michael’s Church, part of the Old Man’s Creek Irish Settlement, is maintained by the Friends of Old St. Michael’s 650 families strong since saving it from demolition in 1996. The site features a 2000-pound bell, stained glass, and a cemetery with about 2000 interments, hosting Irish heritage events such as St. Patrick’s Day dances and annual Feather Party bingo for turkeys.

Downtown group advances Cedar Rapids facade improvement plan
Cedar Rapids officials consider a 50 50 matching facade grant program funded by the city and the Self Supported Municipal Improvement District. Grants of 5 000 to 10 000 dollars may be awarded to property owners for exterior upgrades including lighting with a potential maximum of 30 000 per 300 foot block. The plan, revived after the 2008 flood, aims to spur recovery and modernization of downtown buildings.
