Medicaid Must Fund Abortions for Indigent Women
A three judge federal court ruled that state Medicaid must cover abortion requests from indigent women on request, overturning a directive by the services commissioner. The ruling states unequal rights between poor and affluent women and orders Nassau County Medical Center to treat eligible patients seeking abortion within 24 weeks. Michigan Court Rules Abortion Legal Under 1846 Law
Michigan court of appeals rules a licensed physician may perform abortion in an accredited hospital during the first three months of pregnancy. The ruling says modern medicine makes abortion safer and the 1846 law was intended to protect the mother, not restrict therapeutic abortions. Convictions of two doctors for illegal abortions were upheld in separate Bay and Oakland County cases.

Farmer's Almanac editor tweaks stance on women in 1973 edition
Lewiston Maine AP reports Ray Geiger editor of the Farmers Almanac, changing tone to favor women. He wrote a two page article for the 1973 edition, praising women's intelligence and economic influence, noting 80 percent of consumer purchases are controlled by women and women moving into high executive positions. A Maryland reader's complaint about 1972 jokes spurred the change. The almanac retains humor but shifts toward equal roles and anti stereotyping.
