The 1958 calf crop dips slightly, but reduced slaughter suggests higher cattle inventory by January 1.
L H Simers reports the sheep sector shows steadier price swings than hogs and beef cattle with modest production shifts post World War II. USDA projections anticipate gradual supply growth, steady lamb prices, and favorable cattle margins.
Linn county 4-H girls clothing exhibits collect seven blue ribbons at the Iowa State fair. Sue Calvin of Center Point earns blues on cotton skirt blouse and formal. Cedar Rapids winners include Anita Trachta Loretta Hoppe Judy Lamparek and Barbara Roh lena for various garments.
Des Moines report says a pair of ponies weighing 860 pounds pulled 2 000 pounds 271 feet in the Iowa State fair horse pulling contest. Their team topped a heavier 2 790 pound entry which covered the 2 000 pound load only 18 8 feet. Ponies owned by Sam Ahlenbaugh of Lee Summit Missouri.

DES MOINES The champion FFA market lamb shown by Ivan Collins Jesup sold to Rath Packing Co Waterloo for $1.20 per pound. Rath also bought the champion open class fat lamb shown by Gene Rattler Traer for $1.15 per pound and the champion 4-H market lamb by Garland Kellogg Colo for 80 cents per pound. The reserve champion pen of 4-H market lambs shown by Bob O Donnell Colo sold for 41 cents per pound. Iowa Packing Co Des Moines bought O Donnell’s champion 4-H pen at 40 cents.
Dennis Bierschenk showcases the champion FFA pen in Van Horne bringing a sale price of 41 cents.
Des Moines reports Nuswonger Brothers of Indianola won the champion carcass in the Iowa State fair beef contest with a Shorthorn summer yearling steer. Reserve champion was Forrest Breniman’s summer yearling Angus from Brooklyn. On the hoof results reversed those after slaughter with the live champion Montgom ery of Montezuma placing 31st in its class.
The U S Department of Agriculture announced a purchase offer for canned applesauce and canned sliced apples from the 1958 crop to support the National School Lunch Program. Purchases will be funded by the national school lunch act and depend on quantities and prices offered.
DES MOINES Iowa Angus Association Auxiliary hosts a social for breeders and families at the Iowa State fair Wednesday 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Kirkwood cafe in the basement fair administration building. Center Point Hugh Brody bought three registered Shorthorn females from Harold Appleby of Vinton.
Duluth Minnesota grain handlers vote Monday on a tentative wage agreement to end a five day strike that tied up thousands of tons of grain at Duluth and Superior terminals. The settlement aimed to prevent million dollar spoilage losses for farmers and shippers.
