Eastern Iowa school districts face higher fuel costs as prices rise, squeezing budgets. Cedar Rapids reports 348000 dollars spent on fuel in 2004-05 while districts tighten routes and maintenance to stretch mileage, risking savings if fuel overspends.
Energy costs in 2005 06 shocked districts with fuel budgets up 80 to 100 percent. Western Dubuque County school district business manager Dave Wegmann said prices are higher than expected and affect operations. Officials run few routes and fill buses to cut costs while complying with school rules.
The Bush administration proposed new rules to raise fuel efficiency for pickups, minivans, and some SUVs starting in 2008. The system splits light trucks into six size based categories with higher targets for smaller vehicles and 2008 ranges from 26.8 mpg to 20.4 mpg. By 2010 targets rise to 27.8 mpg and 20.8 mpg respectively. Environmentalists say the plan falls short of reducing oil dependence.
The Urban Deer Task Force voted 8 to 2 to seek city council approval of an annual bowhunt starting this fall and to fund a deer sharpshooting program in 2007 and 2008. It aims to reduce the 2,400 city area deer by about 800 over two years with estimated $250 per deer and $200,000 yearly budgets. The plan hinges on bowhunting to maintain numbers after sharpshooting. The council could act in a few weeks.
A Washington AP report shows obesity rising across the United States with Mississippi, Alabama, West Virginia, Louisiana, and Tennessee among the highest. Iowa ranks 20th with 23.5 percent and Oregon is the exception, as 22.7 percent of adults are obese nationwide in 2002-04.
Health survey shows about a quarter of U S adults are obese with Alabama posting the largest increase. The Trust for America’s Health cites CDC data noting Alabama’s rate rose 1.5 points to 27.7 percent while several states stayed under 20 percent including Colorado.
Harvard School of Public Health researchers found Burger King signs near high schools in Chicago reflect a citywide pattern of fast food venues within easy walking distance of elementary and secondary campuses. Lead author Bryn Austin notes the environment makes healthy eating hard for youth.
