New soil conservationist named Steve Probst to leave Linn County

Steve Probst, Linn County soil conservationist for three years, departs today to become state agronomist with the Soil Conservation Service in Syracuse New York on September 10. Gene Walter, 37, of Fort Dodge, will replace him. Probst notes Linn County farmers have installed over 20 miles of tile-outlet terraces and shifted to conservation and minimum tillage farming. He cites survey findings that 20 percent of the county’s land uses minimum tillage, and warns 40,000 acres could lose topsoil in 25 years without stronger erosion control. Probst stresses changing farmers’ attitudes toward erosion issues and expanding soil plans for urban areas. He will oversee soil tillage programs for New York dairying and specialty crops.
