Washington reports conferees reached agreement on the utility holding company bill, ending a six month dispute and nearly guaranteeing passage. Also, House and Senate conferees agreed on the gold clause bill, barring court suits over Roosevelts devaluation, with a six month window reduced to end January 1.
Congress in heated night sessions rushed major bills toward adjournment of the first session of the 74th Congress. Major actions included an embargo on munition shipments, a three-year farm debt moratorium, a private NRA for coal, and an in principle agreement on utility holding company regulation. Conferees on the alcohol control bill and the wealth tax were close to final action as adjournment loomed. Ray Harrison and Maurice Breen investigated the Woodbury county indictment of Attorney General O Connor. Bert Rollinger testified at Fort Madison state prison that he paid $750 to O Connor for state protection of beer running. He denied being promised release for testimony and said he wrote to Verne Marshall for an interview.
Iowa champions were Benton county crops and Greene county livestock judging teams. Reiss of Benton, Thompson, and Bostrom scored 2621 to beat Woodbury runners up. Reiss won crops judging with 893. Kelley led livestock with 728. scholarships and medals awarded.
In Lapusan Roumania a tax collector cut off the wife’s long hair after finding nothing else to seize for delinquent taxes. The peasant, away at the time, returned and filed suit against the collector seeking redress for the haircut amid the tax dispute.
The time for Will Rogers body to be moved to Oklahoma remained indefinite on Friday. Mrs. Rogers and her children were in seclusion at the Rogers ranch near Santa Monica. Attorney Oscar Lawler said arrangements could not be made yet, and the body rested in a mausoleum vault at Forest Lawn Glendale, with plans to keep it there for at least thirty days.
Washington leaders face a protest from a bloc of southern senators led by James Byrnes demanding a flat 12 cent loan instead of the proposed 9 cent loan and 12 cent guarantee under the Agricultural Adjustment administration program. The coalition vows to filibuster the third deficiency bill to secure the higher loan.

He noted he was summoned with other state executive council members and will defend himself as the Geil and Courtney affidavits referenced Havner’s motives. The statement said the truth would emerge at trial.
Congressman Boehne of Indiana introduced a bill to prohibit Rexford Tugwell, director of the Resettlement Administration, from establishing furniture or other factories on the projects. The measure targets Tugwell's proposed development activities within the agency's housing and community projects.
Sioux City AP report notes Woodbury county grand jury issues three more indictments in its graft inquiry. Walter Maley and Ray Harrison receive two counts each for obstructing justice and interference, Sheriff Ralph Rippey charged with accepting a bribe. Jury total now forty three indicted, seventy eight counts. Deliberations resume Saturday as witnesses are subpoenaed.
President Roosevelt chose Joseph Warren Madden of Pittsburgh along with John Michael Carmody of New York and Edwin S. Smith of Massachusetts to compose the national labor relations board. Madden will serve five years, Carmody three, Smith one. The board enforces labor guarantees under the Wagner act.
The United Press reports a secret inquiry into the bank accounts of wealthy Americans to aid national credit policies. Banks nationwide were asked to cooperate and provide records to federal examiners. The survey, likely tied to wealth redistribution aims, is led by Federal Reserve Board Governor Marriner S. Eccles whose liberal views are known.
In a Tokyo port gendarmes detained an American freighter described as a mysterious foreign vessel after an intensive search by naval planes. The ship was reportedly sought on suspicion of photographing the fortified inland sea zone near Port Tokyuma in Yamaguchi prefecture.
