Life Jacket Loan Program At Coralville Lake
The U S Army Corps of Engineers and Coralville Lake Marina sponsor a free life jacket loan program for children under 90 pounds at the Coralville Lake Visitor Center. People using jackets at beaches or water activities can pick one up there or from a park ranger. The program follows two drownings and a near drowning earlier this year. Allan L. Butler, 19, of Hiawatha, was found after going underwater June 17, and 21-year-old Delton Alexander was resuscitated by beachgoers the same day. Four-year-old Hannah Meeks drowned July 6 at the beach with her family. Adults must present a current driver's license when signing out a jacket. Beaches include West Overlook Day Use Beach, Sugar Bottom Day Use and Campground Beach, and Sandy Beach Day Use Beach.
