Ondansetron Shows Promise To Cut Drinking In Early-Onset Alcoholics

Researchers at University of Texas Health Science Center found the anti-nausea drug ondansetron reduced alcohol use in early-onset alcoholics after 11 weeks. In a 271-participant study, the middle dose lowered daily drink share to about 1 percent versus 3 percent with placebo and led to about 70 percent abstinent days. The trial combines medication with weekly therapy and may tailor treatments to alcoholic subtypes.
