Iowa forecast shows partly cloudy conditions Thursday with cooler easterly winds and scattered showers in west and central portions. Highs near 68 to 75, lows 50 to 60, with continued showers Friday and Saturday. Also reported are divorce petitions, recent fire and injury notes, and obituaries from Waukon, Columbus Junction, McGregor, Victor, Ryan, Decorah, and Solon with funeral details and burial plans.

Des Moines Attorney General Robert Larson says he wrote U S Attorney General J Howard McGrath about a slot machine licensed to the Iowa ordnance plant post restaurant in Burlington. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reports that in certain states, deer populations cause greater harm to forests than wildfires. The finding highlights the impact of deer browsing on tree regeneration and forest health.
Eighteen eastern Iowa residents were naturalized in Cedar Rapids federal court before Judge Henry N Graven. Fifteen women and three men gained United States citizenship. three changed names and one had citizenship restored. Young and Meyers described as fairly good and satisfactory at Mercy Hospital. In Magnus taproom Tuesday night a juke box dispute sparked a brawl. Richard Bowers Runnells Norman Stravers of Mitchellville were fined 25 dollars plus costs for disturbing the peace. Wesley Nelson of 928 Twelfth Street NE was fined 25 dollars for drunkenness and 25 for profane language. he received two days in jail after accusing Bowers of striking him. None recall the song that started the trouble.
Gerald Chapple of 621 C avenue NE suffered a leg gash after a fight near 116 Third street NE shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday. He was treated at St Luke's Hospital with 15 stitches. investigators believe a knife caused the wound. Chapple cannot identify his assailant. Acting Inspector Frank Bukacek ordered an investigation.
Des Moines AP Truman S Stevens former Iowa Supreme Court justice dies at 85. His will filed in district court sets a 75000 dollar perpetual trust for education of worthy young girls at Drake University. The will drawn December 26 1944 also includes 13000 in cash bequests to relatives. Mrs Stevens died in 1948 leaving the wife share unclaimed.
Jackie Mizikow a 12 year old in St Petersburg Florida dyed his hair green to match the color of the final edition of the newspaper he sells The stunt highlights a local boypreneur promoting his paper and drawing attention to a closing edition.
A two car collision Saturday night near Waterloo resulted in fatal injuries for John L. Kauten, 53, of Fairbank Indiana. The crash occurred about four miles south of Waterloo.
Otis D Matthews 19 of 1016 Bealer Court SE was ordered to plead by 10 am Friday in a car theft case before Judge Floyd Philbrick. An attorney was appointed at state expense. He was arrested about 2:30 am Wednesday after his car struck a parked vehicle at Avenue and Sixth Street. Police said he initially denied driving the car, then admitted stealing it from the local used car dealer.
Clarence Hulderman, accused of stealing a car from A Drive It in Cedar Rapids on August 18 1945 and converting it to his own use, was given until August 29 at 10 a.m. to plead before Judge Floyd Philbrick. Hulderman, just released from Wisconsin’s Waupun state penitentiary, was returned to Cedar Rapids Tuesday and authorities say the car has not been recovered.
Allied air forces pounded the battlefront while Soviet built Yaks attacked South Korean naval units in the Yellow Sea. Reports state Red morale is slipping as forces concentrate near Pusan Taegu Naktong front lines. American units guard Naktong positions near Hyonpung Waegwan and Pohang while Kosong coastal pressure tests US and South Korean defenses.
Gov. William S. Beardsley on Tuesday considered a request to extradite Keith E. Le Sever, 27, of 402 A avenue NW, to San Bernardino California to face a larceny charge for selling a television set without proper title. LeSever is held in Linn county jail.
Charles G. Kotek, 41, of 1805 Thirty-third Avenue SW, pled innocent before Judge G. K. Thompson to a drunk driving charge. He was arrested about 9:15 p.m. Monday at Third Avenue and Sixth Street SW by Cedar Rapids police after authorities reported erratic driving.
Howard G Ennis of 508 Fifth avenue SE died Tuesday after a long illness born Chicago July 10, 1910. He was a member of Immaculate Conception church. Survived by wife Julia three sons Howard Richard and Francis and daughter Patricia all at home. Services at Immaculate Conception church 9 am Friday. Burial Mt Calvary cemetery. Rosary 8 pm Thursday Teahen chapel where friends may call.

William P Gallagher died in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday. Services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday in the Teahen chapel conducted by Rt. Rev. Msgr. D J Lenihan. Burial will follow in Autumnwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel. Survivors include Gallagher siblings listed in yesterday's Gazette.

Cedar Rapids police investigated a Tuesday 8:30 p.m. robbery at the B and L service station on First Avenue SE. Attendant Mark Brown said a thief entered during servicing and carried the cash register into the men’s room, locking the door from inside before escaping through a window.

The district court on Wednesday awarded L. P. Christensen doing business as Christensen's Tax Service 138 dollars against Clyde Burgess and Mercy Hospital 117.75 dollars against Albert and Delilah Fannon. A divorce suit by Mildred Schumacher against Erwin A. Schumacher was dismissed by the plaintiff on Tuesday.
New York reports the Dun and Bradstreet wholesale food price index rose three cents for the week ending August 22 to 6.56, ending a two week stalemate and resuming a seven week advance after peaking at 6.70 on September 28, 1948. Prices in the prior year stood at 5.86. Beginning June 20 the index climbed from 5.94 to 6.53 before this week's gain.
About 3 000 employees at the Waterloo Iowa John Deere plant have filed unemployment claims. Eligibility hinges on not being directly or indirectly involved in the strike, per Iowa Employment Security Commission official J R Pefferle. Maximum benefits are 22.50 weekly as the foundry care room shutdown halts plant operations affecting about 7 500 workers.
Hazel Matthews wife of Leo D Matthews of 167 Nineteenth Avenue SW died at University Hospital Iowa City on Wednesday morning. The body is at the Janeba Funeral Home with funeral arrangements to be announced later.
The Iowa state board of control conducts budget conferences with 14 institution heads in Des Moines to prepare the 1951 appropriation requests. Board chair Henry W. Burma notes this is the first time in years such meetings were held in Des Moines. In 1949 the legislature granted the board 8,654,235 for general operations.
A Cedar Rapids council meeting scheduled for Monday discusses moving 70 families from the Ellis trailer camp on Ellis boulevard NW as a housing project is planned. Residents form a seven member committee to work with the city on a long term purchase plan while city measures focus on cleaning the site before the July 1 1951 lease expiry.
Macon Georgia city council approved an anti Red ordinance by unanimous vote. Card carrying Communists were given 48 hours to leave town after the measure passed Tuesday night.
