He cited Alaska travel observations and noted drought hindered recovery yet overall conditions were improving.
Ralph Capone brother of Al Capone and nine associates were seized in a Berlin flat raid in suburban Cook County. Police say the group, including former Scarface gang members, sought to force saloonkeepers to buy only certain beer brands. Capone had been released from federal prison last February and reportedly carried a revolver during arrest.
Berlin reports the Nazi regime signals its next major task is the Saar plebiscite to decide if the industrial mining region stays under League of Nations control remains with Germany or joins France in the January 13 1935 vote.
Al Capone and ten other convicts arrived at Alcatraz after a secure transfer from Lewiston and Atlanta. The prison welcomed the gang with tight security as officials, guards, and cameras guarded the journey and the transfer to the fortress island.

Henry T Rainey longtime speaker of the House was buried after a simple funeral in Carrollton. President Franklin D Roosevelt led a large national and state delegation with thousands of neighbors attending. Rites were held at Walnut Hall estate near Carrollton after a four hour viewing in Greene County courthouse rotunda.
Masses gathered along the highway from the town to Walnut Hall to glimpse President Roosevelt as he passed. Chief M L Taylor enlisted 200 Boy Scouts to manage traffic, ropes strung along both sides. At Walnut Hall the President attended the funeral service for the speaker Mrs Ella Rainey, with pallbearers all local Carro lltonians. He then left for his train after a private brief with Mrs Rainey.
Washington AP reports drought driven debate among farm administration officials over extending wheat production controls into 1935. Negotiations consider preserving a 62 to 64 million acre wheat base with a 15 percent reduction aim, amid 7.5 million acres already removed by cooperative farmers and others increasing plantings.
Two Texas aviators Jean La Rene and Mary Owens began a endurance flight from Curtiss Reynolds airport at 2 36 p m aiming to set a new record. They landed at 7 16 p m after their first refueling contact failed and planned to try again on Thursday.

Hughes announces immediate setup of central offices in key cities like Sioux City and Des Moines to disseminate information and mobilize local programs. Roy Perkins will tour the state to aid launches as smaller towns follow larger cities in implementing the effort.
The American Liberty League, a bipartisan group, announces plans to defend constitutional rights and counter radicalism. Founders include Alfred E. Smith, John W. Davis, James W. Wadsworth, Nathan L. Miller, and Irenee duPont. Jouett Shouse to lead. President Roosevelt’s stance unclear, but believed sympathetic. The league aims to cover the nation and may engage in future political campaigns.
Shouse states the league is nonpartisan and constructive to aid the administration. He rejects anti Roosevelt claims, notes some executive committee democrats aligned with stop Roosevelt in 1932/7, and warns of radicalism while urging protects for rights to work and own property.
