Landlord fraud trial continued in federal court
Cedar Rapids landlord Robert Miell had his mail and tax fraud trial moved to January 5 in Sioux City. He faces 19 counts of mail fraud, two counts of filing false tax returns, and one count of perjury. If convicted he could receive up to 20 years for each mail fraud count, five years for perjury and three years for the tax charges. Miell cited an unusually complex case and discovery as reasons for the delay, plus a conflict for one attorney with the September trial date. Miell owns about 1,000 Cedar Rapids rental properties valued around $80 million. The postponement follows a civil verdict in which American Family Mutual Insurance awarded Miell’s insurer $1.9 million in year.

Iowa City painting sale veto stirs donor group concerns
David Alan Robertson of the Association of College and University Museums and Galleries told University of Iowa President Sally Mason not to sell the Jackson Pollock painting held by the university. He argues selling would violate donor wishes and the organization’s standards, warning it could harm the university’s reputation. Regents study selling to fund flood repairs, Mason opposes. Painting valued at about $100 million.
