A pea sized brain region called the fusiform face area FFA reacts more to faces than to cars dogs or houses. Right hemisphere FFA is dominant. The system explains rapid extraction of identity expression gender age mood and honesty and may underpin social interaction and survival. Researchers note FFA plus other regions for body parts and buildings. This work uses fMRI to link blood flow to neural activity.
