Hearst warns of danger if she testifies against Harrises

Rep. Leo Ryan visited Patricia Hearst in Pleasanton prison and warned her that snitching on William and Emily Harris could endanger her life. He noted prisoners’ code punishes informants and discussed possible security options while Hearst faces an Oct. 2 trial date. Hearst could be paroled July 1979.

Birth control shifts as sterilization rises among couples

A federal report shows pill use declines from 25.1 to 22.3 percent of fertile couples by 1976 while surgical sterilization expands, leaving about 30.2 percent of wives aged 15 to 44 in sterile marriages. White couples show higher surgery rates at 29.1 percent versus 23.1 percent for 1973.
