Independence Hospital Budget Hearing Focuses on Dr Mayner
About 150 Buchanan county residents attend a two hour meeting in Independence to urge reinstatement of Dr A F E Mayner to the Winthrop hospital staff. The board approves a 1 296526 budget for 1970 with a two mill levy to be collected starting Jan 1, 1970. The levy is tied to occupancy at 80 percent and Mayner’s case dominates the debate as supporters urge readmission. Mayner previously faced a five year state board probation after a 1968 incident involving a nurse. He has twice applied for reinstatement without success and would need membership in the county medical society before hospital reinstatement is considered. The budget discussion notes prior funding cuts and recent Blue Cross payments while some attendees argue tax support is needed for Independence hospital. Carl Greif absent. Eber Parker presided.
