Sam Dawson reports differences in daily drink choices across U S regions from a Pan American Coffee Bureau survey of 8,000 people. New England favors coffee and juices, the South leans to soft drinks and milk, the Northwest shows high home consumption, and the Southeast favors instant coffee.
Instant coffee rises while breakfast consumption averages about one sixth cup per person daily. The Southeast reports the highest at half a cup, with Delaware through Florida among top drinkers. Adults drink more coffee and adolescents less. greatest daily use among those in their 30s, average 3.5 cups. New Englanders favor multiple beverages. 81 percent had coffee yesterday, half tea, half juice or milk. Carbonated drinks popular in Kentucky Tennessee Alabama Mississippi. 39 percent had bubble water. Milk strongest in Arkansas Louisiana Oklahoma Texas. Northern states also high. Coffee remains top overall across regions.

In a bridge hand, South wins with an end play at the fourth trick. West’s return dictates the outcome: spade forces declarer to ruff, diamond allows a safe discard, or a finesse. South discards losing spade from dummy and still makes the slam.
