Lightning Sparks West Wildfires Across California and Idaho
Firefighters across the West battled a summer series of blazes fueled by lightning and dry, gusty conditions. In California, the Ponderosa Fire near Manton, Shingletown and Viola burned 23 square miles, threatening 3,000 homes and 300 structures, with 5 percent containment. The region saw evacuations, road closures, and a state of emergency in Shasta County as air tankers and bulldozers joined crews. Elsewhere, other fires in Plumas National Forest, Lassen Volcanic National Park and Mendocino County grew, with containment levels ranging from 32 to 51 percent. In Washington and Idaho, dozen of homes burned in Cle Elum and Trinity Ridge fires, with hundreds of homes threatened and 1,100 firefighters on scene amid gusty winds and potential thunderstorms.
